五台山地处山西省五台县东北部，总面积376平方公里。由东、南、西、北、中五座山峰环绕而成，五峰耸峙，冲入云表，顶无林木，平坦宽阔，犹如垒土之台，故名五台山。因气候凉爽，盛夏时节，绿草红花伴随，台顶千年不化的坚冰，又名“清凉山”。

　　五台山的五座台顶，可称雄奇险秀，甲于天下。北台也称叶斗峰，海拔3058米，“素有华北屋脊”之称，所在的山叫云雾山，台顶平广，恰如一身双头的共命鸟，风云雷雨，出自半麓，有时下骤雨而其上暴晴，四方云气，云蒸霞尉，从台眺望，千嶂竞秀，华北大地尽收眼底。

　　西台顶也称挂月峰，所在的山叫明月山，犹如开屏的孔雀，月坠峰巅，俨若悬镜，其上有泉，岩谷幽潜，登临望山，池映残月。中台顶也称翠岩蜂，所在的山也叫平顶山，顶上北有太华池，右有甘露泉，东南有玉华池。旁有三珠泉，更为锈人的是台顶巨石堆积，有许多大大小小的石头，颜色灰白，棱角分明，被称作翻石，有的似奔马，有的似喘牛，怪石嶙峋，形态各异，颇具欣赏价值。

　　东台也称望海峰，所在山叫青蓝山，状如耸立的巨象，东望明霞，若波若镜，可以远眺大海亦见沧瀛。登临望海峰，可望云海，观日出令人有羽化登仙之感。南台也叫锦绣峰，所在的山叫仙花山：宛如一匹卧马，山峰耸峙，每到盛夏，山花烂漫，香气四溢，犹如置身花海，令人陶醉。
